[국제갤러리] CALDER 2023.4.4 - 5.28

공중에 매달려 공기의 진동에 의해 움직이는 칼더의
작품에 ('움직임'과 '모티브'를 뜻하는 불어의 언어 유희로)
'모빌'이라 이름 붙인 건 바로 마르셀 뒤샹(Marcel
Duchamp)이었다. 칼더는 뒤샹과 동시대에 활동하면서 당대 유럽의 모더니즘과 미국의 신생 아방가르드 흐름을 연결하는 주요한 가교 역할을 했다. 칼더는 자신의 다채로운 시각 언어와 조각에 대한 접근법을 꾸준히 발전시켜 나갔고, 제2차 세계대전 이후로는 국제적 명성을 얻는 예술가가 되었다. 미술사의 판도를 근본적으로 바꾸어 놓게 된 칼더는 전세계 다양한 범주의 후대 작가들에게 영향을 미치는 굳건한 유산을 남겼다.

이번 전시는 칼더 작업에서 '제스처(gesture)' 와
'직관(intuition)'이라는 요소가 어떤 방식으로 움직임에 대한 작가의 장악력을 뒷받침하는지 조명하고자 한다.
이 같은 양상은 보는 이가 예상하지 못하는 순간 유유히 회전하며 우아한 리듬을 자아냄으로써, 즉 작품이 차지하는 공간뿐 아니라 작품이 부유하는 공기 자체를 활성화 함으로써, 조각이라는 장르의 영역을 확장시킨 칼더의 모빌 작품들에서 잘 드러난다.
